El Sueño Americano

by Yesica Machado

America was a movie

where celebrities walked its streets.

I left my country because of violence,

Gangs fighting each other on the streets.

I left my country because of poverty,

Because people earn 5 dollars after an 8 hour workday.

I left my country because you had to have money

to have an education.

I imagined America as a beautiful movie.

I imagined that all people were kind.

I imagined that the streets were clean.

I imagined that there was no poverty.

I imagined everything was pink.

But America is a country full of unfriendly people.

But in America you’re separated from the people you love.

But America is a country where no matter what you do,

you fall into depression.

But in America people give you strange looks just because of your skin color.

This is America, a country of opportunities,

but also a country of loss.

America is like a caged bird

and I am like a soulless person.

America is like when you see a movie

and then you see it again.

You know exactly what’s going to happen—

that's my life.

I know what awaits me every day

I leave at six in the morning

To study for six hours

To work for another eight.

All this to achieve  "El Sueño Americano".
